Picking a triathlon coach
1. Find a coach that is educated and experienced, not just credentialed. There are many excellent coaches that have an excellent background and coach athletes with success. Some of these coaches do not have credentials. There are many coaches that have the credentials to be a great coach, but are not. Find a coach that has the education, experience, and credentials to be a great coach and have athletes to prove it!
2. Find a coach that is focused on coaching not performing. There are many
excellent coaches out there with an excellent racing resume. There are many
excellent coaches out there with a sub par racing resume. There is little
correlation between racing performance and coaching performance.
3. Think of the coach-athlete relationship as a partnership. Do you have
good rapport with the coach? There are many great athletes and many great coaches, but they do not
always bond well. Interview several coaches before choosing one.
4. Does the coach have testimonials and referrals? Talk to the people that have been trained by the potential coach.
5. Finally, who writes the training programs and performs the coaching? Make sure
the person you hire and talk to is the one actually writing the training
programs!
